Kelela is back, and with a vengeance.
Ahead of her highly anticipated debut album, the soulful songstress has graced us with some mesmerizing visuals to accompany her most recent single, “LMK.”
The video pays homage to 90s R&B as Kelela sashays through a crowd serving looks reminiscent of vintage Lil Kim and Aaliyah, while still transporting us into a metallic, futuristic landscape that fuses darkness with a fresh, airy lightness.
“LMK” is an ode to carefree camaraderie between a girl and her girls, letting a potential fling for the night know that she’s down for something casual, but will be enjoying herself with or without his company—never compromising her self-respect. Always versatile, Kelela’s emotional candidness and forthright nature seep through even her most party-friendly jams. Even so, she reminds us “it ain’t that deep by the way.”
Be on the lookout for Take Me Apart, dropping via Warp on October 6th.
