San Diego native esta dropped the Feathers EP, a free/name-your-price EP on his birthday yesterday. Esta belongs to the LA-based record label Soulection, which houses some electronic music’s under-the-radar stars Mr. Carmack, Sango, and Ta-ku. The same can be said about esta and his work; he racks up several hundred thousands of listens for his self-proclaimed “dancable, but sexy” orginals and remixes that often sample popular hip-hop/rap vocals on his Soundcloud.
The Feathers EP is is no different, but veers a little out of his comfort zone. In “All Night,” Justin Bieber’s vocals and original track were pitched down and turned from “dance-pop” hit to bass-heavy trap track, turning “What Do You Mean?” into something more like Travi$ Scott-produced and featured “No Sense”. “Special Affair” brings out esta’s best Chromeo impression, taking The Internet‘s original in a different direction with an upbeat feel, funky basslines, and polished synths. The original off the EP, “Feathers,” shows off his hip-hop instrumental talent with some help from JBird on the keys, shining the spotlight on some much underappreciated jazz-piano.
Esta is due for his first official album release next year, so be on the look out for that if you’re feeling this new EP.
