Hip-Hop icon Pusha T has been named the President of GOOD Music, the Def Jam imprint label founded and headed by Kanye West.
The news comes through an exclusive interview and report via Billboard, in which Pusha confirmed a number of details about the move — among them:
-Pusha’s focus, per Kanye’s request, will be “to manicure the label, make it profitable and be very business-oriented about it going forward in a manicured type of way.” There’s such an emphasis on the “manicuring” of the label that a form of the word came up five times in the brief discussion of the direction Pusha will take with the imprint.
-Pusha’s long-time manager, Steven Victor, will join Pusha as Lead A&R at GOOD.
-Focus will be placed specifically on capitalizing with GOOD’s already-attained artists and assets, as far as what they bring to “the music industry, our following, and the culture,” in Pusha’s words.
-Pusha teased the idea of a Cruel Summer 2 compilation, saying “I definitely have that on my mood board,” adding, “It’s not a hard process and it’s gonna be cool to collaborate with my peers and then come to ‘Ye as an executive producer and be like, ‘Look at this fresh ass shit we got here.'”
-Pusha emphasized that this role change is unrelated to his forthcoming album, King Push. “My album is just a whole other thing in all honesty … [this album] is something people probably haven’t heard in the past 18 years. I’m just putting it together, aiming for classic material.” He also noted we can expect the “first offerings” from the album before 2016.
Most exciting morsel of this news? Asked how he was going to celebrate becoming the boss of one of Hip-Hop’s truly legendary imprints, P responded, “it’s all about work right now.” If that shit doesn’t get you motivated, better check your pulse.
Our take on the whole thing is that this is exactly what the doctor ordered for the seemingly tired of-late imprint, and doubly so if Kanye’s rumoured hiatus from music following the release of SWISH holds any weight.
