Portola Festival returns to SF with XTINA, LCD Soundsystem, Moby, & a stacked dance floor

San Francisco’s other music festival is back. Portola returns to Pier 80 on September 20–21, and is bringing one of the most exciting and eclectic lineups on the national festival circuit this year.

Now in its fourth year, Goldenvoice’s electronic-leaning weekender has garnered a reputation for pulling off what few others can: bridging decades of dance history with the sounds of right now, and this year’s headliners are proof.

LCD Soundsystem tops Saturday’s bill with an equally buzzworthy Bay Area debut of Despacio, the immersive, vinyl-only project helmed by James Murphy and 2manyDJs. Sunday’s vibe takes an ultra-glam, high-voltage 90s detour with Christina Aguilera—easily the festival’s biggest pop get to date. And Portola’s not done digging through the crates: Moby, The Prodigy, and Underworld are all bringing rare sets from the fog machine haze, glowstick-wielding rave era of the 90s.

But, the festival’s lineup goes much deeper than all the boldface names. There’s a strong bloghouse and indie-sleaze revivalist presence this year (The Dare, 2manyDJs b2b Erol Alkan, Kreayshawn), plus rock-leaning acts like Blood Orange, The Rapture, Caribou, and Magdalena Bay to round out the roster. On the club end of the spectrum, heavy hitters Peggy Gou, Dom Dolla, and Duke Dumont are bringing the house vibes and big-room energy, and Marie Davidson and Horse Meat Disco are sure to keep things weird, loud, and fun.

Held on a stark stretch of industrial waterfront, Portola trades the grassy whimsy of Golden Gate Park for something a tad grittier, and more warehouse rave than its wine-tasting picnic festival sib, Outside Lands. And that’s part of its charm. Portola is dance music in a city built for afterparties.

Two-day and single-day passes are on sale now via Portola’s website. See you in the pit.
