Essentials: “Vigilant” – Laura Holliday

Singer-songwriter Laura Holliday’s “Vigilant,” featured in the trailer for the critically-acclaimed film Disfluency starring Dylan Arnold, Libe Barer, and Ariela Barer, is brought to life with a new music video. Directed by Disfluency filmmaker Anna Baumgarten, “Vigilant” is an emotional and unconventional search within for self-love.

Baumgarten shares, “I often think of my body and being as a house that needs care, maintenance, and protection. When Laura and I first started talking about making a music video together for her song ‘Vigilant,’ I shared this idea of viewing ourselves as our own home. We talked about expectations around love, the search for it, and self-preservation.

Holliday identifies as queer and has an invisible disability due to hyper-mobile Ehlers Danlos syndrome, dysautonomia and a primary immune deficiency. They share that music is central to their healing, and they aspire to make songs and films that make chronically ill young people, and folks with CPTSD feel seen.

Reflecting on Holliday’s music and the making of the video, Baumgarten shares, “the lyric ‘Everybody wants love, but nobody feels safe,’ spoke volumes to me. We’re all trying to find the balance between where our armor begins and our vulnerability ends. We’ve all got our guard up—and, honestly, sometimes, rightfully so—but it’s only once we begin to take a closer look at our own hyper-vigilance and decide to authentically open the door for others that we can accept the kind of love worth having—from friends, family, lovers—into our lives.
