Essentials: All the Things She Said – Kučka

New-age electronic producer Kučka has debuted a shimmery, exultant cover of Russian pop duo t.A.T.u.’s “All the Things She Said.”

I was in school when t.A.T.u. first came onto the scene with this track and it terrified me. It was everywhere,” said the Australian talent. “I was so embarrassed when it would come on TV in front of my family, that my reaction to it would somehow out me.

Despite the track being mired in controversy—from wide-spread criticism of alleged queer-baiting to the song being a gimmick to catapult two teens to international pop star status—it saw a meteoric rise to number one on the music charts across several countries around the world within a year of its release in 2002, including the U.S., Australia, Austria, France, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

How problematic the creators were doesn’t interest me much now since the cultural landscape is much different, but I am happy to be able to finally enjoy this absolute banger of a tune,” said Kučka.

The acclaimed song has continued to resonate with many over two decades and has seen a resurgence in the last few years, spurring edits, covers, and remixes by artists like barnacle boi, Sam Feldt, Poppy, Olivia Rodrigo, Harrison, POLINA, and now Kučka—who had been playing her cover before its release on October 19, during tour performances to audiences who’ve widely lauded her interpretation.

Playing it out has inspired many super queer make-out sessions at my live shows, so I’m happy to contribute to reclaiming this track and creating a new legitimately queer legacy for it!
