EP Review: Signals – Misticeti

A humpback whale falls against the sand on the cover of Misticeti’s Signals EP and this image feels like an apt representation of the music: bright and otherworldly, but upbeat and optimistic for what could be.

The opening track “Mirage” gently pulls the listener into a mystical world. But this is different from a more tranquil soundscape to escape to or even a headbanger; instead, what we are presented with is an adventure to explore.

Across four tracks, we traverse a unique synthscape of easy beats and energetic rhythms. “Hybrid Feelings” is darker and more danceable than “Mirage,” but still packs a punch with a compelling rhythm. “Whale Spirit” is the heart of the EP, a track that seems to unite all the others with its encompassing atmospheric sound. “Now I See” invites introspection in its title, and although the opening is more vibrant, it does settle into a space for reflection.

Fundamentally, the EP is a marriage of introspection and optimism, pushing us forward as listeners to thoughtfully explore the unexpected. I am very excited about what we can expect from Misticeti in the future.

Misticeti is the creation of Juan Manuel Vasquez, whose stage name is inspired, unsurprisingly, by the calls of humpback whales. A documentary filmmaker as well as a musician, Misticeti is a flexible creator able to produce content that takes from various genres, mixing them to create a warm yet introspective sound.
