Essentials: “Don’t Let Me Go” – Nikky Bourbon

Nikky Bourbon has made her bow for 2023 with the intoxicating love ballad “Don’t Let Me Go”.

Nikky Bourbon’s enrapturing vocals take hold early on with the Latinx songstress laying bare the song’s core dilemma. Taking turns between Spanish and English, Bourbon paints a sonic portrait of two lovers drinking from a poison chalice, who’s love causes pleasure and pain in equal measure. She is Bourbon’s “light” and her “darkness” at the same time.

The track’s music video exemplifies this perfectly. Featuring Bourbon and Sulem Calderon, who also helped to produce the track, the video shows the pair in a mirroring LGBTQ+ romance to what the song depicts. The physical rock formation between them signifies the spiritual while the impassioned vocals and lush visuals embrace you.

Bourbon said of the track: “”Don’t Let Me Go” means “Fighting for love and doing whatever you must to salvage your relationship. It’s one of those songs that is more of a feeling than a thought, and the message is to love without judgment of yourself or the other person and to be in the moment with whatever it is that you’re dealing with. It’s always good; even heartbreak is beautiful.”

The story is told over lush afrobeat production. Bourbon channels her Puerto Rican heritage and vocally blends it with her New York upbringing. Touching on issues prevalent to herself, the rising artist showcases who she is on the track and why exactly we should all take note.
