Essentials: “Physical Layer” – Lamorn

“Physical Layer”, the debut single from Deadmau5 protégé Lamorn is an exhilarating, genre blending adventure. The single brings together elements of funk, house and electronic into a Daft Punk-esque mix that’s equal parts groovy and thrilling. “Physical Layer” is driven throughout by an extremely danceable bassline on top of which, Lamorn layers on a cavalcade of retro synths. After exchanging music with Deadmau5, Lamorn sent him a piece that left the legendary DJ so moved that he signed the 18 year old to his label Mau5trap “on the spot”, a show of faith if there ever was one. “Physical Layer” is showing dividends to that faith already.

Something evident in the song is just how well crafted it is. You could fool yourself into thinking it was made by a veteran producer of 20 years, let alone someone who isn’t even that old. The production is immaculate and the interplay between all the interweaving elements is excellent. It all comes together in a song that is as much of a statement of intent as it is a feel-good bop.

“Physical Layer” showcases why the Arizona native, still only 18 years old, has been touted so highly and is an exciting show of things to come from the up-and-coming producer.
