Essentials: “Bakery” – Phay

“Bakery” delivers that bright and sunny bounce Atlanta rapper Phay has built his brand on. It’s a joyous victory lap for a rapper, but it’s not without its fleeting moments of cathartic confession. “I’ve been feeling numb inside / at least He took that pain from me.” Just two bars later, Phay lets it loose that he “used to wear a 32.” In the second verse, he raps, “Rise and shine like Kylie / but stay low-key like Kendall.” God always has a home in Phay’s lyrics, and where better for Him to be company than over classic chipmunk-soul production Phay’s monopolized coming out of Atlanta.
