Essentials: “Yesteryear (Brame & Hamo Remix)” – Cosmo’s Midnight

Irish house duo Brame & Hamo might not be the most obvious choice to remix the retro-leaning funk sounds of Cosmo’s Midnight, but through some kind of musical alchemy, it sounds completely natural. An ecstatic plunge into trance’s insistent basslines and yearning melodies transforms “Yesteryear” from a ’70s disco fantasy to an emotional stomper of a track.

The remix comes as part of Cosmo’s Midnight’s upcoming album announcement—they’re dropping their sophomore album, Yesteryear, on October 2nd. Considering the sun-washed vibe that the Aussies infuse into their music, it’s a surprise that such a thumping house tune can be pulled out of it. Brame & Hamo pair the wistful vocals of “Yesteryear” with their own melodic trance and acid hybrid elements, and pack an added punch with a kick drum that rattles around in your eardrums.

I dream of the day that I can hear Brame & Hamo’s remix of “Yesteryear” pouring out of a Funktion-One sound system at 1 am, ideally in some European club. In the meantime, I’ll keep rinsing the hell out of the track, along with replaying Brame & Hamo’s most recent Boiler Room stream.

“Yesteryear (Brame & Hamo Remix)” by Cosmo’s Midnight is available now on all streaming platforms.
