Krystal Metcalfe Begins A “Fearless” New Era

Krystal Metcalfe Saint Audio

Chicago artist Krystal Metcalfe has been on our radar for a while—ever since her electrifying performance at Mamby On The Beach last summer, we’ve been eagerly awaiting new music from the powerful songstress. Now, we’re pleased to share her new single “Fearless,” and get some background on her journey as an artist.

“Fearless” is all about breaking down stereotypes and being seen and appreciated as yourself. Was there a particular moment that inspired the creation of the song?

Absolutely! Actually, there were several. For the past couple of years prior to recording, I found myself living in complete fear. I would have so much anxiety about things that have never happened and probably never will. I started meditating, going to therapy, and I had to learn how to cope with my thoughts and feelings instead of letting my fears take over my present moments. I was searching for freedom and peace and wanted to make a bold anthem to uplift myself. I felt trapped in a box, typecast, and pigeon- holed. “Fearless” became a resistance against societal views and norms; a resistance against what people think Black women should be. We are multi-faceted beings and I really wanted to express that with my new music.

What can you tell us about your upcoming EP, Fear Less

IT IS JAMMING! I can’t wait to share it this summer! I had this bright idea to take my band into the studio, and record 8 songs in 7 hours. It was an ambitious feat, but I wanted the records to feel raw, high energy, and reflect the freedom and fearlessness we feel on stage at our live shows. I kept seeing strong fearless icons as my inspiration: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Freddie Mercury, and so many more.  I’m a huge fan of Queen, and I love their anthems. I wanted to create a project that would motivate, inspire, and give people the drive they needed to go for what they want—records my supporters and I could sing to the top of our lungs in a stadium, and feel free!

How has your process as an artist changed over the years?

My process as an artist has changed drastically over the years. Being a DIY artist, I’ve learned so much about what it takes. I now know exactly what I want: to be a full-time artist. When I first started, I had no plan whatsoever. I really would go wherever the wind blew me. I quickly learned that if you shoot at nothing, you’ll hit the mark every time. I knew that I loved music, but I didn’t know in what capacity I wanted to be an artist. I could only see one kind of career, and I didn’t realize there are so many avenues I can go in to express my art. Now, I’m all about the power of manifestation, creative visualization, and strategizing to make sure that my dreams come to fruition.

What’s the one thing you think new fans should know about you before they listen to your music?

They should know that I’m a firm believer in knowing that we are all in this together! I’m big on community, encouragement, and support for one another. There is room for everyone! It’s never too late to go for what you want; No matter how big or small your dreams are! Keep FEARLESSly striving for your dreams… because I’m gonna keep striving for mine!
