Essentials: “Face My Fears (feat. Hikaru Utada)” – Skrillex

J-Pop powerhouse Hikaru Utada returns to provide the theme for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3 alongside dance-music dynamo Skrillex. Though at first this may seem an odd pairing, Skrillex has produced some pretty solid pop, and “Face My Fears” is no exception.

Skrillex creates an EDM soundscape over which Utada’s melancholic defiance soars. The song electrifies, arming the listener to tackle darkness with the frenzy of chopped vocals, while shifting into piano interludes that still allow them to breathe and let loose their tears. The song has both English and Japanese versions.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be playing the previous thirteen Kingdom Hearts titles to be able to hear this song in the context of Kingdom Hearts 3, available stateside from 29 January, 2019.
