Essentials: “Two Wildly Different Perspectives” – Father John Misty

Josh Tillman has never been afraid to express his honest, and often absurd, analysis of the social climate in America. As Father John Misty, he’s released a variety of politically charged songs behind a mask of irony and humor. Some of his finest lyrics have come from this lens, including Bored in the USA, but there’s always been a hint of mockery and arrogance to keep things light. On his latest release, Tillman has stripped away any inkling of satire to voice his disappointment with President Trump’s recent Muslim ban.

The candid lyrics explain the pain and loss that both sides experience in a divided nation. Stripped down instrumentals with hollow strings and glitchy drums create a tense landscape for the devastating message. This unexpected release serves as a timely response to Trump’s executive order, along with a message from Tillman stating:

More kids are going to die now thanks to the unbelievably selfish immigration policy of places like Saudi Arabia and the USA.

“Two Wildly Different Perspectives” is the second release from Father John Misty’s upcoming third album. Pure Comedy will be out April 7th via Sub Pop Records.
