Our lucky friends across the Atlantic had the pleasure of experiencing a wide theatrical release of Damien Chazelle’s critically-lauded La La Land on 16 December 2016. Yet it was only on Thursday, January 12th, that saw the hit film reach British shores, bringing with it a glorious and energetic score that fuses jazz with classic musical tropes.
Featuring vocals from the film’s cast – including Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and John Legend – Justin Hurwitz’s score perfectly balances the lively in songs like “Another Day Of Sun” and “Someone In The Crowd” with the delicate – heard in “City of Stars”, as well as “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)”. The instrumental numbers do not disappoint either, lending their accompanying scenes extraoirdinary emotional weight (“Planetarium”).
Hurwitz’s score acts not only as an uplifting standalone piece of music but as the beating heart of Chazelle’s beautiful film. Have a listen of the soundtrack below and then take yourself to the nearest cinema as soon as possible – this is one film that demands to be seen and heard on the silver screen.
