What better way to learn English than to start rapping? That’s the approach that HuBei born, Brooklyn based MC Bohan Phoenix took after immigrating from China to Boston at age 11. The video for rapper’s latest single, “MOTIVASIAN,” is like if Keith Ape, JMSN, and Odd Future teamed up to do a modern riff on The Big Lebowski. Directed by Tony G, the video follows Phoenix and his crew as they traverse through NYC and China to save Bohan’s kidnapped cousin, while smoking lots of cigs along the way.
Alpha Pup affiliated producer Howie Lee‘s production takes sounds traditionally associated with Asian culture, and turns them on their head to bring out Phoenix’s determinedly gritty voice and droll flow. The lead single off the Foreign EP, “MOTIVASIAN” gets me excited about what’s coming in 2016 rap, and it should get you hyped too.
