It’s been a minute – no, a year – since we’ve heard original material from NY producer Branchez, and while the wait was long, it was so worth it. Earlier today he dropped “Cuenta,” a hybrid of massive trapped-out synths and jittery, cartoon-y dancehall vocals. One of the most distinguishable parts of Branchez’s sound is his unique use of vocal samples as instruments – in “Cuenta,” high-pitched yelps and commanding tongue trills serve to accentuate the reggaeton-inspired riddim breaks and marimbas that speckle the track. A new addition to the producer’s already stacked arsenal of beats, “Cuenta” is one to get the trap arms going, even if you’re in the middle of the library (like myself). We’re hoping that this track and his upcoming tour dates are signals of more Branchez originals coming soon.
