It’s been a minute (over a month) since Baauer released his “ß” EP on Scottish label LuckyMe, and two weeks since he dropped “Swoopin” as a single.
Staley: After a nearly two-year hiatus, we have some pretty high expectations for the producer, and he’s definitely come back with a noticeable bang. The NYC-based Harry “Baauer” Rodigues released an insightful doc with Red Bull titled Searching For Sound, which I personally really dug. It’s nice to see a little bit more about the creative process for Baauer, because when I first heard his tracks way back, I thought his ear for production was refined in it’s grimy bass – something I hadn’t been exposed to before. Big ups to that Obey City remix. One of those songs that’s a certified classic in my book.
S: Along with the movie, Baauer did a Reddit AMA with Nick Hook, his production pal, low-key hitmaker, and co-star in Searching For Sound. All in all, Harry’s been a busy dude. For that, I’m glad. I was ready to see him back on the music scene. Who else remembers the Infinite Daps tour movie? Just me? Hemmy, Henry, Harry, and Jim-E-Stack all on one bus. It’s like an electronic fangirl’s dream – or maybe it’s just mine. That was the ONLY time in my life that I was sad to not live in Ohio. The Infinite Daps tour had that kind of power. Be proud of yourself, boys.
Will: But, we don’t love EVERYTHING about Baauer’s return.
I’ve been meaning to get this off my chest for a while now, so it here it goes.
“Is “Swoopin” and the rest of “ß” good, new music from Baauer?”
Definitely. You can tell he’s really trying to diversify his style with different percussion and noises he heard from traveling the world: incorporating some ideas from native music, all while still keeping that hard-hitting sound we come to love.
Could the EP fix the disappointment of the cancelled “run X” tour with Boys Noize?
We get that things happen that are sometimes out of everyone’s control, but we’re salty. Salty because we love Lido, Nadus, and WE NEVER GOT TO HEAR THIS TRACK LIVE. WHAT. IS. THAT. We know it was a bummer for all involved though.
We can’t be too mad. Baauer gave us this gem. And for that, we’re grateful. Luv u Harry.
